Well, it’s a Good thing I’m Creating this Virtual Gallery of the Good Green Thumb Nursery because if I hadn’t looked up the Spelling of Crassula Rubricaulis and found that the Images didn’t match the plant I’m looking at, I would still believe that the plant pictured above is a Crassula. It is not.
It is Anacampseros Variegata and although the above specimen does not look as spectacular as it can, I was still happy to finally catch this one in flower today because these flowers (as beautiful as they are) only last for a single day and only for long enough to fully open and close again. By tomorrow, the above plant pod Will begin to wither and die and the second flower One can potentially see (very blurry behind) Will probably open tomorrow. Then the entire stamen Will shrivel up and fall off.
What I Love About the Sand Rose
This plant is almost impossible to kill and has exactly the same care properties as any succulent. Let it get bone dry between waterings, then water graciously and repeat. This plant grows pretty fast for a succulent and when I say it is not as beautiful as it can be, the summer was not as hot this year (I suppose), so the leaves did not turn red at the tips but they usually do. You can see another in a pot of mixed succulents behind that has the nice, ruby red tips. I think the other reason for that may also be that this is not My mother plant (well, I suppose it is now). This plant is only one year old made from cuttings in a new pot that I had hanging directly in My window, so it Will be getting more light than the parent plant it came from (which was very red at the tips of the leaves) and is already about the same size as the original plant I purchased. So My guess is that the red tips develop with age because although the one in the background is significantly smaller, it is because it is only one leaf cutting (rather than several in the pot pictured here) and is actually one year older but ‘Bonsai’d’, if One Will.
Really just a very simple and beautiful succulent to put in a Good sunny windowsill! It looks great even without the red tips, but I Will Show You again next year when it’s a little more mature.
