Hello every One and welcome to a Good Green Thumb Nursery update on My unique ‘Sport’ Monstera White Magic!!!
If You are not familiar with the backstory, or what a Monstera Sport is, please check out the link below.
A White Magic Marvel
Yeah, so it’s not a hybrid because a hybrid is a cross between two similar plants, it’s a Common Monstera Deliciosa that randomly mutated – it is essentially a new Way of Expressing its original DNA. No One really knows why it happens and its pretty rare (at least as far as My research has indicated). This also means it can stop expressing it Self this Way at any time, too.
This plant was only eight dollars including taxes (Canada) in a four inch pot with three other Monstera Deliciosa youngsters (none mature enough to have fenestrations yet). I had only heard of rare Monstera Sports a few days before this and thought I noticed a spash of white on one of the leaves. It also looked like it might be bird droppings.
On closer inspect-Sean, it was in fact a mutation in the leaf and it appeared to be in the successive leaves as well! I grabbed it immediately.
The Evolution of a Monstera Sport – The White Magic is Spell Binding
The below slide Present a Sean Will Show why it might be hard to spot a Sport. The first leaf looks perfectly normal, no variegation at all. Surprisingly, it was the tiny bit of white at the top of the leaf in the second photo that caught My attention. The plant was also much smaller in general at the time, it is now two months old in My care, so although the variegation is pretty easy to spot on the third and fourth leaves now, it was not so prominent at the time as the fourth leaf was only beginning to unfurl. The last two leaves are the first new leaves to grow in My care, which is roughly about every three weeks so far.
One can also cycle through to the beginning and backwards through the slideshow Present a Sean, so it can be especially cool to compare the last leaf with the first.
A Monstera Sport Collector’s Dream – The Marvel of White Magic

The leaf pictured above is how it looks right now in My Microcosm and why I’m sharing this Post with You. I Wish to share the Magic and Marvel of the Monstera Sport if One is every Lucky enough to obtain one. The fact that I did after Wishing for one only days before is a Miracle and Blessing in and of it Self.
The fact that the above leaf is every Sport collectors absolute dream just makes the name of My Mostera White Magic that much more appropriate. I can also tell You that in My experiences, when buying young Monstera Deliciosa it is always the sixth leaf to Show the first fenestration (unless growing from a more mature cutting). I actually though the Monstera White Magic was going to be an except-Sean because I couldn’t see any when the leaf was first emerging (usually You can see them before the leaf begins to unfurl) but this one was tucked inside the roll up so didn’t emerge until this morning!
Having said that, I do actually have one Monstera in My collect-Sean now that is only on its fourth leaf and it already has four fenestrations!!! I have never seen that before but it was a new, young plant added to a massive pot (relatively speaking, twelve inches), so I am thing King they like to have a lot of space for their roots if One Wishes for large, fenestrated leaves. Definitely not the norm for Me, though – the sixth leaf is pretty consistent for Me on all My other Monstera (I have eleven in total)!
What Makes it a Marvel, why is it Unique and ‘Dreamy’?
Initially, I could only see splashes of pretty vibrant white – which is still very cool! Monstera Albo is green and white, gorgeous, and was immensely sought after for a while and is still very popular now, though prices have come down because it is now quite common. One of the ‘hotter’ varieties for collectors of unique Monstera now are Monstera Mint which has different shades of green mixed with almost pure white or creamy white depending on the different variations.
The previous leaf was the first leaf to have two distinct variegations of leaf colour which isn’t just pretty to look at but also indicates that the mutation is likely more stable because to have that layer of variegation requires for the mutation to be in the vascular system of the plant (I’m Trusting Monstera experts I Trust to be smarter than Me). This is further reinforced if the variegation continues into the stem and petioles, which in My case, it does!

As it continues to grow, the characteristics become more dramatic, so I Wish share some photos of the striping in the petioles when the plant gets larger. It is also a stunning feature!
Love and Gratitude
I am feeling very Blessed to be able to share the excitement of My Monstera White Magic Sport with You and feel especially Blessed that the variegation is about as beautiful and consistent as any One could Wish for. So far, it’s showing no signs of reverting any time soon or becoming entirely white (Albo in the plant enthusiast world) which is equally bad.
Why is full Albo or White Bad?
If the mutation takes over and causes the plant to lose all it’s colour, it effectively no longer produces chlorophyl or whatever it is that makes them green (so they can no longer absorb Energy from the Sun). They can’t photosynthesize Energy without chlorophyl (or something like that).
Love, Blessings, and Happy Growing!
