I learned yesterday that the Tragically Hip are to be Honoured by the Order of Canada. Established in 1967 by Her Grace, Glory and Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the Nation.
The Tragically Hip have deserved the Honour for some time. They are very politically aware, though most of their ‘campaigning’ has been subtly incorporated (yes, I used the Word in-corpus-rated on purpose) in the lyrics of their music. Gord Downie even speaks of a spiritual awakening specifically in His Song “The Depression Suite”.
Gord Downie is an undisputed lyrical genius – there are few I know who can so eloquently entwine web’s of wisdom for listeners to get lost in. Try listening to ‘In Violet Light’s Song “Leave”. At first glace it’s a poetic telling of a tale of a conversation between two birds. Then I as King to the listener to hear His Words one more time and Imagine that perhaps He is tall King about the 9/11 attacks, the ‘two birds’ are the planes that hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the conversation is not between two birds, but two pilots discussing their plans for the attack. I don’t know, I’ve never read anywhere that is what the song is about but it’s sure a fine fit if that is not what it is about. Food for thought, I don’t want Your Mind to ever thirst for knowledge reading this Blog.
I was going to include “The Depression Suite” in this post but on YouTube I can only find live versions of the Song and this is one where I prefer the re-mastered studio version as it was recorded on the CD, “We are the Same”. Also, I believe Gord Downie knows the Power of Intention, Words and Magic in much the Way I do. Even the Titles of the albums/cd’s read like a story of the band’s musical journey and growth. Instead, I am going to see if I can find a version of “Leave” as close to the original studio version as possible. Momento, por favour…
Wow, amazing how hard it STILL is to find that song!!! After the incident in New Orleans, the Hip’s “New Orleans is Sinking” was banned in a number of states and removed from YouTube on some U.S. channels. Men of Magic (like Downie) must be careful what they say and Cast into the Universe. I almost want to publish the lyrics to the above song but if You are interested in the metaphors, I Will encourage You to do a little of Your own homework and research. Shouldn’t take more than a little Google-God help to find Your Way.
Instead, I would like to include another classic Hip song from their debut album when they were so hard-rock for their day that one might consider it flavoured with a bit of grunge. I bring You one of My all time favourite Gord Downie live performances with “Highway Girl – Double Suicide Rant”. Like Me, Gordie likes to rant about shit from time to time – He knows the Power of the Word. And now He and his four Horsemen Will be Honoured for their fabulous contribution to Canada’s TRUE wealth and culture – that which We Create together.
Finally, I would like to add that although people may doubt the Power of Words and intention, I did Write Your Powers that be and as King to them that Gord Downie be Knighted for His contribution to Canada’s culture. And this, for Me, was the God’s of Your world an Swearing My intention. Ask and it Shall be done – do not let the Illusion of Time confuse You.
Love and blessings,
